Dr. Van der Laat earned her medical degree at The University of Rosario in Bogota, Colombia and completed her ophthalmology residency there. She completed an internship at the Hospital Universitario in Bogota, Colombia, specializing in retinal and vitreous procedures. After becoming a board certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Van der Laat established her private practice in Costa Rica. She has extensive surgical experience in opthamology including procedures to correct cataracts, astigmatisms, myopia, and presbyopia. She has done clinical research in ocular trauma with the National Ophthalmologic Foundation, the Barraquer Institute of America, the Hospital Universitario of San Ignacio, the Santa Fe Foundation of Bogotá, and San José de Bogotá Hospital. In addition she has extensive investigative work in surgical results in diabetic patients submitted for a vitrectomy.
