Dr Wong's resume reads like a Who's Who in urology. He is President of the Singapore Urological Association, Founding President of the Asian Society of Endourology, Editorial Member of the Journal of Endourology and that is just the beginning! US trained, Dr Wong has performed fellowship training and residency programs in endourology, stone treatment, female urology and robotic urology surgery.

Ok, so Dr Wong is a bit of an over-achiever. But that’s a good thing, especially when it comes packaged in an easy-to-like kinda guy, which Michael most certainly is.

Dr Wong gave me a thumbnail sketch of his practice and his patients, and the surprising thing for me was how many international patients he sees. According to Dr. Wong, around 50 percent of his patients are Caucasian men from the US, Europe and Australia. The other interesting tidbit is that he works hand-in-hand with his gynecologist partner, Dr Julianah Abu, to tackle urological issues of concern to women, like incontinence.

Two areas where Michael and I connected were on the topics of men’s health and web technology. Both of us agree that urology is becoming the new gateway for men’s health, as more men seek medical attention for impotency and erectile dysfunction only to learn that these issues underlie other medical conditions, like hypertension and coronary artery disease.

The other is the role that the web and social media will play in doctor selection and patient connection. Dr Wong believes, like I do, that the internet is reshaping the way doctors talk to patients and colleagues, and embraces web based technologies that help drive connectivity. (Incidentally, he practices what he preaches. Michael emailed me the next day thanking me for my visit. Nice touch!)

Dr Michael Wong is one of those doctors who understand that importance of establishing a connection with people, and personally I find that more important than all the credentials he has attached to his name.
