I met Dr Ece Salihoglu for the first time in March 2011 during a visit to Acibadem Healthcare — Turkey’s largest private healthcare group.
Accompanying me on that visit were two US doctors, Dr Marcy Zwelling and Dr Rebecca Muninovic. From the moment in met her, I could just sense that that Dr. Ece was a star doctor, and after accompanying her on rounds you could tell her patients thought the same.
Pediatric cardiac surgeons are a special breed. Technically, they are very skilled surgeons. You have to be to operate on the hearts of newborns and small children. But skill aside, Dr Ece is simply a delightful person who gives children (and their parents) new hearts and new hope.
Dr Ece has performed over 500 pediatric cardiac surgeries and her reputation has spread beyond Turkey and into neighboring countries. Approximately 20% of her patients are children with congenital heart defects from Romania, Macedonia and Bulgaria. After performing rounds with Dr Ece, the two US doctors both looked at me and said “Wow”. Now that’s an endorsement.
