Bariatric Surgeons

Bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery) is the medical specialty concerned with treating obesity.

General surgeons that specialize in this field of medicine are called bariatric surgeons or weight loss surgeons. Bariatric surgery is used to treat people who are morbidly overweight, which means their weight is a significant health risk.

There are several types of bariatric surgery, but all bariatric surgery is performed on the stomach and intestines using open or laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery. In all cases, the objective is the same -- to restrict the amount of food that one can intake and digest. Bariatric surgery is considered a permanent solution to weight loss. Patients who undergo this surgery are required to make significant and lifelong changes to their diet and eating habits.

There are three main procedures performed by bariatric surgeons: gastric bypass surgery, LAP BAND surgery and the gastric sleeve surgery.
