Spine surgery is the medical specialty concerned with treating disorders of the spine (neck and back). Spine surgeons specialize from either an orthopedic surgery or neurosurgery background.

The spine is complex, made of 33 vertebrae in 5 regions. The three main areas of the spine are the cervical (neck), thoracic (upper back) and lumbar (lower back) regions. Each vertebrae contains many parts such as the bones, spinal canal and spinal column, and are separated by discs.

Conditions treated by spine surgeons include sports injuries to the spinal column or spinal cord, spondylitis, spinal stenosis and slipped or herniated discs. Common procedures performed by spine surgeons to treat these conditions include discectomy (removal of a disc), microdiscectomy, laminectomy, spinal fusion and total disc replacement.
