Rheumatology is the field of internal medicine concerned with diagnosing and treating rheumatic diseases. Doctors specializing in this field are known as rheumatologists.

Rheumatologists deal mainly with conditions affecting the joints, soft tissues, autoimmune diseases and connective tissue disorders.

The range of diseases diagnosed or managed by rheumatologists is diverse, but commonly known diseases include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis and rickets.

Treatment for rheumatological diseases is mainly by medication with analgesics, anti-inflammatories, steriods and anti-rheumatic drugs. Physiotherapy is also widely used for treating many rheumatological disorders.
