Radiation Oncologists

Radiation oncology, radiation therapy (US English) or radiotherapy (British English) is a sub-specialty of oncology concerned with using radiation for the treatment of cancer or to kill malignant cells. Doctors specializing in this field of cancer medicine are known as radiation oncologists (not radiologists).

Radiation therapy is used because of its ability to control cell growth and is often employed to cure localized tumors as the radiation can be targeted to specific areas. Radiation therapy may also be used following surgical oncology to prevent regrowth of tumors.

Radiation oncologists use radiation therapy to treat most common types of localized cancer such as skin cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer and prostate cancer. Procedures performed include stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT) used to treat brain tumors, image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and brachytherapy.
