Eye Doctors - Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is the medical specialty concerned with conditions and diseases of the eye.

Doctors that specialize in this field of medicine are called ophthalmologists commonly known as eye doctors. Conditions treated by ophthalmologists include glaucoma (excessive pressure in the eye), cataracts (clouding of the lenses), macular degeneration (age related loss of vision) and retinal disorders (problems with the nerve behind the eye). Pediatric ophthalmologists are specially trained to manage eye problems that affect children including strabismus (crossed eyes) and amblyopia (lazy eye).

Common procedures ophthalmologists perform include color blindness testing, cataract surgery, LASIK, corneal transplants, eye muscle surgery (strabismus surgery) and vitrectomy.

Ophthalmologists may sub-specialize as pediatric ophthalmologists, refractive surgeons, cataract surgeons and ocular oncologists.
