Cancer doctors that specialize in this field of medicine are known as oncologists. Oncologists focus on cancer detection, treatment and management. Cancer is a complex field of medicine, and the disease affects every part of the body. The most common types of cancer include breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, colo-rectal cancer, oral cancer and leukemia (blood) cancer.

Procedures and therapies performed by cancer doctors include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, biological therapies, cryotherapy, photodynamic therapy, and bone marrow transplantation. All are committed to destroying or stopping the spread of cancer.

Cancer doctors may sub-specialize in one of three main sub specialties; medical oncologists (treatment of cancer using drugs), surgical oncologists (treatment of cancer using surgery) and radiation oncologists (treatment of cancer using radiation).
