Nephrology is the specialty of internal medicine concerned with treating conditions of the kidney. Doctors who specialize in this field of medicine are known as nephrologists.

Nephrologists treat conditions such as urinary tract infection, hematuria (blood in urine caused by trauma, infection, kidney stones or less often by a tumor), proteinuria (protein in urine symptomatic of chronic kidney disease), kidney stones, hypertension and diabetes based kidney complications, chronic kidney disease (CKD) or kidney failure.

Procedures performed by nephrologists to diagnose kidney conditions include abdominal CT scans, abdominal X-rays and ultrasound. Procedures to treat kidney conditions include medication with steroids and anti-hypertension drugs, kidney lithotripsy, kidney dialysis and kidney transplant.
