Infectious Disease Doctors

Infectious disease doctors are internists or internal medicine doctors who have trained further and use their extensive and expert knowledge of infectious disease to treat patients.

Infectious diseases are illnesses resulting from biological pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and even proteins (prions). Conditions diagnosed and treated by infectious disease doctors range from the common including malaria, hepatitis and tuberculosis to the rare such as ebola or prion diseases like Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (or CJD) otherwise known as mad cow disease.

Infectious disease doctors use their expert knowledge of signs and symptoms together with examinations and tests to diagnose the disease underlying the illness. Procedures performed include CT scan and ultrasound, bacteriology examination, virology examination and vaccination.
