General surgery is the surgical specialty concerned with investigating and treating diseases of primarily the abdomen, digestive tract and torso.

Doctors that specialize in this field of medicine are known as general surgeons. General surgeons typically treat diseases of the esophagus, stomach, intestines, bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and thyroid gland using invasive or minimally invasive means. They also do surgery on the skin, breast and hernias.

There are a wide range of procedures performed by these surgeons including, gall bladder removal surgery, thyroid removal surgery, hemorrhoid surgery, bariatric (weight loss) surgery, hernia repair, lumpectomy (partial removal of the breast) and spleen removal surgery.

General surgeons may sub-specialize in trauma surgery, breast surgery, colo-rectal surgery, laparoscopic surgery, vascular surgery, and endocrine surgery.
