Vasectomy is a very effective form of birth control and a near permanent solution for men who do not wish to conceive. There are various methods to perform a vasectomy such as traditional cutting with a scalpel, 'keyhole' vasectomy and clamping, but all vasectomy techniques cut block the vas deferens so sperm is not present in the semen and the man cannot make a woman pregnant.

For couples, vasectomy is considered to be preferred to the corresponding procedure in women, tubal ligation, as it has a lower failure rate, is far less invasive and has less complications.

A vasectomy can in some cases be reversed using a procedure called a reversal vasectomy, but that is a complex procedure that involves the surgeon reattaching the tubes previously cut.
