Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a surgical procedure to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) – an enlarged prostate.

Transurethral resection of the prostate is a form of prostatectomy where part or all of the prostate is removed. TURP is considered the “gold standard” treatment for men with BPH -- a non cancerous enlargement of the prostate that leads to problems urinating or the need to urinate frequently. TURP involves shaving off a section of the prostate to make it smaller.

Transurethral resection of the prostate is also sometimes used for symptomatic relief of prostate cancer.

Alternative procedures to TURP include green light laser therapy (PVP - photo selective vaporization of the prostate) and transurethral microwave therapy (TUMT).
