Find a Doctor for Splenectomy

A Splenectomy is a surgical procedure to remove part or all of the spleen.

The spleen is an organ of the immune system found in the abdomen that filters the blood, removing old red blood cells and platelets and fighting off certain types of bacteria. A splenectomy is performed when the spleen is damaged or diseased. It may also be removed to diagnose lymphoma and remove an enlarged spleen caused by malaria and mononucleosis. A splenectomy can be performed using keyhole surgery or open surgery, if there has been a great deal of enlargement or damage has been done due to a traumatic event.

A splenectomy is typically performed by a general surgeon.
