Pulmonary Function Test

A pulmonary function test also known as a lung function test is used to check how well your lungs work.

Pulmonary function tests are usually used by allergists & immunologists and pulmonologists to diagnose conditions such as asthma, pulmonary fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD.

A pulmonary function test is used to measure how much air you can take in to your lungs (lung volume measurement), how fast you can move air in and out of your lungs (spirometry), how well your lungs deliver oxygen to the blood (lung diffusion capacity) and how strong your breathing muscles are. As these factors are also important when considering surgery you may also be asked to undergo a pulmonary function test prior to an operation. They are also used to monitor the effectiveness of ongoing treatment.
