Prostatectomy

Prostatectomy is a surgical procedure to remove part or all of the prostate gland to treat men with advanced benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) ( enlarged prostate gland) or men with prostate cancer. A prostatectomy can be performed using open surgery, laparoscopic surgery or computer-assisted laparoscopic surgery. In all cases the objective is to remove all or part of the prostate gland which is either cancerous or severely obstructing urinary flow.

The procedure used for prostatectomy depends on the underlying condition. For BPH, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) using electocautery is considered the gold standard. Alternatives include green light laser therapy (PVP) and transurethral microwave therapy (TUMT). For prostate cancer options include open or laparoscopic prostatectomy.
