Periodontal Disease Treatment

Peridontal disease treatment describe various procedures for treating periodontal or gum disease.

Gum disease is commonly caused by poor oral hygiene. The mouth is full of bacteria and this bacteria forms a colorless coating on the teeth called plaque. Plaque that is not removed hardens to form tartar which cannot be removed by brushing the teeth. If plaque and tartar are left on the teeth too long the bacteria first cause gingivitis and if not treated, periodontitis.

Mild gum disease or gingivitis can often be reversed with proper daily brushing and the help of regular cleaning (scale and polish) by a dentist. Periodontitis causes loss of gum tissue and bone and may require surgery.

Treatments for periodontitis include deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), flap surgery and bone and tissue grafts.
