Percutaneous Coronary Intervention

Percutaneous coronary intervention or PCI is a non-surgical procedure to unblock obstructions (stenosis) in the arteries that supply blood to the heart.

Percutaneous coronary intervention is commonly know as coronary angioplasty or balloon angioplasty which describes the inflation of a balloon within the artery to crush the plaque that is blocking the flow of blood into the wall of the artery, but there are often other procedures performed during PCI. Additional procedures include implantation of stents, atherectomy (removal of plaque) and brachytherapy to inhibit regrowth of plaque (restenosis).

Percutaneous coronary intervention is commonly performed by cardiology doctors and interventional cardiologists.
