Non-invasive Testing

Non-invasive testing commonly refers to a group of tests used to diagnose blockages of the heart ( coronary artery disease), but are also used for conditions such as congenital heart defects or abnormal heart rhythms ( arrhythmia).

Non-invasive tests are usually performed or requested by cardiology doctors, radiologists or cardiac surgeons and as the name suggests do not involve injecting chemicals or inserting a camera in to the body. Non-invasive testing includes CT scans, echocardiography, electrocardiography (electrocardiogram or ECG and stress ECG) and MRI scans.

There is much debate over whether non-invasive testing is accurate enough to replace the more traditional invasive techniques and often when a blockage is found an invasive procedure such as cardiac catheterization is requested anyway.
