Microdiscectomy

Microdiscectomy is a surgical procedure to treat weakness, numbness or pain in the leg caused by a herniated or slipped disc.

A microdiscectomy is performed to treat sciatica - a condition that occurs when the soft gel inside the disc that sits between two vertebrae in the spinal column ruptures and presses on the nerves that run along the spine causing pain or numbness. The operation removes the soft part of the damaged disc, alleviating pressure on the nerve and allowing it to heal.

A microdiscectomy and a discectomy are the same procedure except that a microdiscectomy is performed using minimally invasive techniques via a very small incision, whereas a discectomy is performed using traditional open surgery. A microdiscectomy is also referred to as spinal decompression surgery.

Microdiscectomy is a surgical procedure performed by an orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon.
