LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure of the eye to improve vision.
LASIK is refractive eye surgery and commonly used to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism (misshapen cornea). LASIK is a popular surgery for people who no longer want to wear contact lenses or eye glasses. LASIK involves using an excimer laser to reshape the cornea and change its focusing power. There are several different types of LASIK technologies used including Wavefront.
Other excimer laser procedures to correct vision problems include PRK (photo refractive keratectomy) and PARK (photo astigmatic refractive keratectomy). People with vision problems that cannot be corrected using excimer laser may require IOL (intra ocular lens) implants.
LASIK is performed by an ophthalmologist.
