Gastric sleeve surgery or gastric sleeve resection or sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical procedure to help severely obese people lose weight.
Gastric sleeve surgery is one form of bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery used to treat people who are morbidly overweight, which means their weight is a significant health risk. It is typically prescribed for people who have tried unsuccessfully to control their weight through other means, like diet and exercise, and are at risk for other complex diseases like heart failure, stroke and diabetes.
Gastric sleeve surgery is a laparoscopic procedure whereby the surgeon removes around 85% of the stomach, leaving a ‘sleeve’ or tube that is substantially smaller and thinner. The result is a smaller stomach that functions normally, but fills easily and creates the feeling of fullness. Unlike gastric bypass operation and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding surgery, this procedure is not reversible, but there are fewer dietary restrictions.
Gastric sleeve surgery is usually performed by general surgeons with specialty training in bariatric and/or laparoscopic surgery or bariatric surgeons.
