Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL)

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy or ESWL is a non surgical treatment to remove kidney stones.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is a common procedure to treat people with kidney stones - crystal formations that obstruct the flow of urine, impair kidney function and cause severe spasmodic pain particularly when urinating. ESWL uses a device known as a lithotripter to produce shock waves that penetrate the body and into the kidney, pulverizing the stones into small fragments which are then passed in the urine.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is a procedure performed by urology doctors or nephrologists (kidney doctors) other kidney stone removal procedures include laser lithotripsy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL).
