Electrocardiography (ECG)

Electrocardiography (ECG or EKG) is a procedure or test that produces an electrocardiogram. ECG is performed to record the heart's electrical activity over a period of time and is used to measure how forcefully your heart beats and the regularity of heartbeats.

Electrocardiography is used to detect signs of heart problems, the effects of devices, such as a pacemaker, used to control the heart and the size and position of the chambers of the heart.

An ECG can reveal a number of heart problems such as lack of blood flow to the heart muscle, irregular heartbeat, a heart that does not pump strongly enough, birth defects in the heart or disease of the heart valves.

Electrocardiography is normally performed by cardiology doctors.
