Echocardiography

Echocardiographyis a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that uses ultrasound to produce an echocardiogram which is a two or three dimensional image of the heart. Echocardiography can also provide information on the speed of blood passing through the heart and allows assessment of the cardiac valves functioning.

Echocardiography is used in the diagnosis and management of patients with heart disease and is a widely used diagnostic test in cardiology. Stress echocardiography produces an echocardiogram whilst the patient undergoes excercise such as walking on a treadmill. This test is used to assess the heart's response to physical stress.

Echocardiography is usually performed by cardiology doctors with an ultrasound technician.
