Diabetes Treatment

Diabetes (properly known as diabetes mellitus) is a condition where a person is unable to regulate the glucose level of the blood. The condition occurs when the body produces too little insulin (type 1 diabetes) or when the body does not respond to the insulin (type 2 diabetes), causing high blood sugar. Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that occurs in a small percentage of pregnant women.

Diabetes treatment depends on the type of diabetes. In type 1 diabetes where the body produces too little insulin diabetes treatment includes exercise, balanced diet and insulin injections. In type 2 diabetes treatment starts with weight reduction and exercise. If that fails to control blood sugar levels, oral medications are used and if that fails, insulin treatment is used.

Diabetes treatment is usually provided by endocrinologists.
