Crowns (Ceramic and Metal)

Ceramic crowns and metal crowns are caps that cover existing teeth or dental implants. There are various types of crown such as all metal crowns, porcelain fused to metal and all ceramic crowns and each has advantages and disadvantages.

Ceramic crowns are usually made from all porcelain. There are various methods of making them including dental CAD/CAM milling machines that can produce crowns very quickly. The advantage of ceramic crowns is their natural look, but they are also more likely to chip than a porcelain on metal or metal crown. Ceramic crowns also last much longer as they extremely hard, but this advantage can also mean that other teeth can wear down quicker through grinding.

Metal crowns are made from alloys of metals including gold, platinum, silver and copper. The main advantages of metal crowns are their longevity, resistance to chipping and less wear on other natural teeth. The main disadvantage is the metal color.

Porcelain fused to metal crowns allow the crown to be color matched to the other natural teeth, but are more likely to chip than all metal crowns and a dark line may be visible at the gum line. Newer innovations make use of ziconia metal for the core as this gives a much more natural look than normal metal crowns.
