Coronary artery stenting is a procedure to place a tube in the coronary arteries at the site of a blockage. This procedure is performed as part of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to unclog the arteries.
The procedure involves using a catheter to place a balloon covered by a wire mesh tube inside the artery at the site of the blockage. The balloon is then enlarged to expand the mesh tube which in turn widens the artery to improve blood flow. The catheter is then removed and the stent remains in place. Newer types of stent called drug-eluting stents have been designed to release drugs over time to reduce the chance of blockages reforming around the stent.
Coronary artery stenting is usually performed by cardiology doctors or interventional cardiologists.
