Colonoscopy is especially useful for diagnosing ulcers and polyps in the colon. The procedure involves using a small camera attached to a flexible tube or fiber optic cable which is inserted through the anus to view the internal structures of the digestive system. During the procedure the instrument allows the doctor to take biopsies, remove entire polyps or cauterize lesions.
