Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is a common procedure used worldwide to restore sight to those previously considered to be "legally blind".

A cataract is when the lens of the eye has clouded over and impedes the patient's ability to see normally. There are several approaches a doctor can take to cataract surgery. The two most common are phacoemulsification and extracapsular cataract extraction. Phacoemulsification involves using ultrasonic frequencies to emulsify (liquify) the natural lens. Extracapsular cataract extraction requires the doctor to remove the lens through an incision in the cornea or sclera.

Doctors that perform cataract surgery are ophthalmologists ( eye doctors).
