Cardiac Stress Test

Cardiac stress test is non-invasive diagnostic procedure that normally uses electrocardiography (ECG).

This test is performed to compare blood flow to the heart muscles while at rest with blood flow during physical exertion to show any abnormalities such as ischemic heart disease. The cardiac stress test is performed whilst the patient exercises on a treadmill, an exercise bicycle or by stimulating the heart with drugs.

The cardiac stress test is sometimes accompanied with echocardiography that is performed before and after the cardiac stress test to identify differences in the structure of the heart.

A cardiac stress test is normally performed by cardiology doctors.
