Bone Marrow Transplant

A bone marrow transplant is a procedure to replace bone marrow cells that have been damaged or destroyed with healthy cells (bone marrow stem cells).

A bone marrow transplant is used to treat bone marrow that has been destroyed during radiation therapy or chemotherapy, and to treat blood born diseases like aplastic anemia, sickle-cell disease, lymphoma, Ewing's Sarcoma, and Hodgkin's disease. The marrow can either be transplanted from one part of a patient's body to another or from a donor, usually a close relative.

When the transplant uses marrow from the patient's own body it is called an "autologous" bone marrow transplant. When the transplant uses marrow from a donor it is called an "allogenic" bone marrow transplant.

A hematologist or a medical oncologist ( cancer doctor) typically perform bone marrow transplant.
