Balloon Angioplasty of Coronary Artery

Angioplasty, balloon angioplasty of the coronary artery, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) are all the same thing – a non-surgical procedure to unblock obstructions in the arteries that supply blood to the heart.

This procedure is considered the “gold standard” for treating people with chest pain (angina) caused by narrowing or blocked arteries, and minimizing or preventing a heart attack or the need for coronary bypass surgery (CABG).

The procedure involves using a balloon to enlarge the artery and improve the flow of blood to the heart. Other techniques, like artherectomy and placing a stent, may be used at the same time to clean out the clogged artery and keep it open.

This procedure is commonly performed by Cardiologists and Interventional Cardiologists.
