Ankle Replacement Surgery

Ankle replacement surgery (ankle arthroplasty) is a surgical procedure to replace a diseased or damaged ankle with a replacement prosthetic (artificial) device.

Ankle replacement surgery is a complex surgery to treat ankle joints deteriorated by arthritis or damaged by injury or fracture leading to loss of movement, flexibility and severe pain. Ankle arthroplasty replaces the damaged bone and replaces it with a prosthetic device that helps restore stability and full functional movement.

This procedure is a substitute for another procedure called ankle fusion surgery or arthrodesis, which fuses the ankle joint sacrificing up and down movement of the ankle.

Total ankle replacement is performed by an orthopedic surgeon.
