Allergy Testing

Allergies are a growing problem in today's world. It is estimated that more than 50 million Americans have allergies.

Some allergies can cause serious, life threatening conditions known as anaphylaxis, so to understand how to manage your allergy and find the correct treatment, allergy testing is very important.

Allergies are defined as hypersensitivity to normally harmless substances (allergens). Allergic reactions occur either when a substance is breathed in, consumed, brushed against the skin or you are stung or bitten. The most common allergies include allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and allergies to common foods such as milk, eggs or wheat and the now well known peanut allergy which has often caused anaphylactic shock in people. Asthma can also be caused by allergies.

Allergy testing is normally performed by a doctor specializing in allergy and immunology otherwise known as an allergy doctor or allergist. There are many types of allergy testing including blood tests, skin tests and elimination tests (controlled diet). The type of allergy testing often depends on the way the allergy is triggered.

Once the allergy is identified treatments such as allergy shots or immunotherapy can be suggested.
