Enlarged Prostate

Enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is caused by an increase in the number of prostatic stromla and epithelial cells which forms large nodules in the prostate. When the nodules are large enough they constrict the urethral canal blocking the flow of urine.

Symptoms of enlarged prostate or BPH include frequent urination, difficulty in beginning urination, painful urination and an increased risk or urinary tract infections. BPH is also extremely common with an estimated 50% of men having indications by the time they are 50 years old.

Treatment for enlarged prostate ranges from medication for mild cases to surgery for the more severe. Surgical treatment includes TURP or transurethral resection of the prostate, TUMT or transurethral microwave thermotherapy, and green light laser therapy.
