An allergy is an undesirable reaction of your immune system to a normally harmless substance. Substances that cause allergic reactions are known as allergens.
Allergies are caused by various environmental factors such as airborne substances like pollen and dust, substances we consume like food or medicine, insect stings and bites, and chemicals such as latex or dyes. One of the most common types is allergic rhinitis; the name given to symptoms such as watery and puffy eyes, runny nose and sneezing and is caused by airborne allergens. One form is hay fever caused by allergic reaction to a variety of plant pollens. Allergies can also be a cause of asthma.
Why do people have allergies? It is believed people can both inherit genes that make them susceptible and also develop allergies through environmental factors. An example of this is allergic reaction to latex developed by healthcare workers snapping on and off latex gloves.
If you suffer from allergies you should seek advice from a doctor who can conduct allergy testing to positively identify the cause. You will then be recommended treatment such as antihistamine or even allergy shots.
Doctors that treat allergies include dermatologists, general practitioners, internal medicine doctors, pediatricians and pulmonologists. For expert advice they will refer to an allergy doctor.
